Our final meeting of the year will be held on December 18 at the Deep Run Recreation Center in Deep Run Park beginning at 6:30 p.m. We will have our annual holiday dinner for club members as well as our chapter contest and a special prize drawing! More details can be found in Spare Parts.

In addition to our usual categories, our contest will feature awards for the theme--TV and Movies--as well as awards for the James Alvis Memorial Build.

PLEASE LEGIBLY PRINT THE ENTRY FORM IN SPARE PARTS PRIOR TO THE CONTEST... ONE FOR EACH ENTRY. We anticipate a record number of entries so your cooperation in doing so will greatly help the registration process. Also, please consider arriving early to register your models.

November Newsletter and Next Meeting: November 20, 20223

The November newsletter can be found by clicking here or under the Spare Parts tab above.

Our next meeting will be held on Monday, November 20, at the Deep Run Park Recreation Center. The hall will open at 5:30 for silent auction donations and registration and the meeting will begin at 6:30!

Bob Walls, our auction guru, already has in excess of 100 kits and supplies up for auction but we have room for lots more. Be sure to take this chance to gain some "home front" points by decreasing your stash in time for Christmas!

And bring loads of cash and/or a checkbook to the meeting. There will be primo kits available at bargain basement prices. But remember... NO CREDIT OR DEBIT CARDS ACCEPTED. All proceeds will go to the Virginia War Memorial Foundation so come prepared to bid, bid, bid.

Details on the auction and the registration form can be found in the attached newsletter.

Also, and importantly, we will hold our annual chapter officer election. Please print the ballot from the newsletter and bring it with you to the meeting.

See you on the twentieth!

IPMS Richmond Loses Two Longtime Members

It's very sad to report on the recent deaths of two members of the IPMS Richmond community: James Alvis and Frank Gomillion.

James Alvis passed away last weekend of natural causes. Visitation and burial will be:

Visitation: 12 noon - 1:00 p.m.
Service: 1:00 p.m. - 1:30 p.m.
Burial at Signal Hill approx. 2:00 p.m.

James was a longtime member of IPMS Richmond and exemplified someone who truly loved the hobby. He was a prolific modeler and his interests spanned all genres and we all will certainly miss his "Show & Tell" presentations.

Frank Gomillion passed away on July 7, 2023 after a prolonged illness. Funeral and burial will be:

Saturday, July 15, 2023

Laurel Hill Funeral Home
10127 Plank Road
Spotsylvania, VA

Funeral: 11:00 a.m.
Burial: Laurel Hill Memorial Park following service
Luncheon: Basilico Restaurant, 7013 Harrison Road, Fredericksburg, 12:30 p.m.

Frank was a member of IPMS Richmond during the 1980-90s. He gravitated towards figure painting and was one of the original members of the Virginia Company of Military Figure Collectors. Although he moved to Fredericksburg he was a frequent attendee at the Old Dominion Open.

Please keep these two gentlemen in your thoughts and prayers.

Spitfire Quick Reference

For all of you Spitfire junkies (and you know who you are!), E.L. has forwarded a "Modeler's Guide to the Spitfire." It's loaded with good info on the Spits but what I found of great interest is the table listing distinguishing features of the different variants.

Our next meeting on Monday, June 5, will feature the return of our chapter's June contest--the same categories you all love and a chance for bragging rights until our Christmas Contest in December. No theme, no awards... just good ol' camaraderie. So finish-up those kits you purchased or won at the ODO and let's see the finished models! Be sure to print and LEGIBLY complete a registration form for EACH MODEL you're entering in the contest and bring them with you on Monday. P-38 Lightning USAAF Flight Manual

Guerry Bowen is one of our members who lives in Chester. Over about the past five years, his health has kept him from attending monthly meetings, but he continues his interest in and support of IPMS-R.  A few days ago, Guerry e-mailed E. L. with something he wanted the club to have. He sent him the official USAAF Flight Manual for the P-38 Lightning. It obviously has everything you would want to know about the P-38... 102 pages of good information. It’s a neat bit of WWII history.

It is posted here under the Resources tab above for all to enjoy. Thank you, Guerry!

Chapter Contest: June 5, 2023

A highlight of our next meeting on June 5 will be our summer chapter contest! No theme, no awards... just an opportunity to show your completed models.

Categories are the same as for our annual Christmas contest:

  1. Figures
  2. Armor/Artillery/Softskins
  3. Civilian Cars/Trucks
  4. Maritime
  5. Aircraft
  6. Real Space/Sci-Fi
  7. Dioramas/Vignettes
  8. Other Subjects
..... and "Best in Show"

So finish up all those kits you purchased or won at the ODO and bring them to our June meeting.

PLEASE complete the Contest Entry Form before our meeting. Download it by clicking here, complete it LEGIBLY, and bring one for each of your models to the meeting. I will have a few blank copies at the meeting but not enough to cover everyone who wants to enter.

Model registration will begin as soon after 6:00 p.m. as possible. See you then!

2023 ODO Class Winners!

Thanks to everyone who worked so hard to make this year's ODO a success! Without your work both on the day of the show and, for many, years before, we would not have been able to provide modelers with the experience that is uniquely the ODO. And thanks, too, to all the vendors and attendees for once again making the trek to the Richmond Raceway.

The remaining contest results and other pertinent ODO information will be posted soon.

Following are photos of the class winners. Special thanks to John Robinson for his trove of excellent ODO photos!

Call for ODO Judges!

Uncle ODO Wants YOU...
... to help judge the afternoon of the ODO on February 25!

If you've never judged during a model contest before, here's your chance. The Judges Meeting will be held at 11:30 a.m. in the front of the hall. Numerous announcements will be made during the show as to time and place.

Participating as a judge allows a modeler to look at models in a new and objective fashion and has been declared almost unanimously to be the single best way to become a better modeler.

If you've never judged before, you will be placed on a team with more experienced judges to assist you in learning the ropes. Do NOT let inexperience stop you from volunteering to help judge...that's how you learn.

See you on February 25!
