December 2022 IPMS Richmond Chapter Contest

In addition to our annual chapter dinner, the December meeting will feature our annual contest. The theme this year is "1972"--a model of anything in use or existence in 1972 is eligible. Theme entries will be entered in a separate category so if 1972 isn't your bag you can enter any of the other categories.

For your convenience, you can download the contest entry form here. Print as many as you need (one per model entered) and bring the completed forms with you to the meeting. This will greatly speed up the registration process and let you get to the food just that much earlier!

See you then!

. and put less strain on the guys who will be registering the contest entries.

2022 ODO Rules & Category Clarifications

As our annual show nears, we are receiving more and more questions regarding the category and rule changes for 2022. Following are the revisions for 2022:

Categories:
  • Gundam: The four Gundam categories have been split from under Figures, allowing for a "Best Gundam" special award.

  • Miscellaneous & Other Materials: Two categories have been added. The old Miscellaneous (Cat. 69) is for primarily plastic models and the winner will be Best of Show eligible. Cat. 70 is Maritime, wood constructed, and is NOT Best of Show eligible. Cat. 71 is All Other Types and is for paper and other materials (not plastic nor wood) and is NOT Best of Show eligible. These changes mirror those at the IPMS USA level and are due to the proliferation of non-plastic-based models.
Rules:
  • Model Registration: Entries are limited to 8 models total with no more than 1 per category.

  • Display Only Table: There will only be one Display Only table. Once it is filled, no more will be placed.

  • Scratch-Built: 3D printed models/parts ARE allowed, but must be entered in the appropriate stock categories and NOT in Scratch-Built.

  • Composition: If the predominate material in a model is other than plastic, those entries MUST be placed in either Cat. 70 or 71 (see "Miscellaneous & Other Materials" under "Categories" above).

  • Photos in Time: In addition to how well the models capture the photos displayed, they will also be judged on the quality of the build.
If there are further questions, please email the Head Judge at greyhund@verizon.net.

Letter to All 2022 ODO Attendees

2022 OLD DOMINION OPEN (ODO) ATTENDEES

The ODO Committee held a meeting on January 31st to discuss the current conditions related to Covid and the affect they will have on our upcoming show on February 26th. At this time there are no meeting size or mask restrictions being imposed by the locality or the Commonwealth of Virginia.  We do, however, encourage anyone wishing to wear a mask in concurrence with CDC recommendations for indoor spaces to do so.  We also ask that if you are sick or not feeling well, to be safe and considerate of others, you should forgo our Show this year. That goes for Vendors as well and a full refund of table purchase will be provided.  If mandated mask restrictions are imposed by either the locality or the Commonwealth, they will need to be abided by, but we do not anticipate that at this time. Attendance of the Old Dominion Open is at your own risk and should be personally evaluated.

Another important item of discussion of the Committee was a rule change.  The current model entry maximum per attendee is 12 with a maximum of 3 in a single category. The total by an entrant has been revised to 8 with a max of 1 in a single category.  We feel the added build time produced by lockdowns and lack of Shows will likely produce a larger than normal number of model entries.  A larger number of entries will overwhelm our limited table space and increase judging time significantly.  Therefore, this measure has been taken to ensure there is sufficient display table space and time to complete the judging in a timely manner.  We apologize for this restriction, but feel it is necessary for the 2022 ODO to maintain our Show’s high standard the modeling community has come to expect.

The difficulties in conducting a Show in the middle or tail end of a Pandemic have been many. Our IPMS Richmond membership have been diligently preparing for the 2022 ODO. We ask that everyone please have patience the day of the show.  Lines may be longer and slower than in a normal year.  The front doors will open at 8:30am to attendees.  Only IPMS Richmond members will be allowed entry through the front doors prior to 8:30 for set up. Only Vendors will be allowed through the back doors for their set up prior to 8:30am.  There is limited space between the front door and the registration tables. We fully expect the registration line to reach outside the front doors, so please plan accordingly based on the weather.

Thank you and we look forward to welcoming you to the 2022 Old Dominion Open on February 26th.

--Richard Leininger, ODO Show Chairman
