February 2024 Newsletter

The February 2024 Newsletter is available by clicking here or under the Spare Parts tab at the top of the page.

Our next meeting will be Monday, February 12, at the Deep Run Park Recreation Center. It is important that everyone attend who is able as we will be discussing final preparations for the ODO to be held on February 24. See you then!

2024 ODO Floorplan

The 2024 Old Dominion Open model show and contest will be held in a larger building at the Richmond Raceway. The Old Dominion Building is larger than our past location, has more room for more vendors (140 tables), more space for model entries, and more space for club tables. Instead of a snack bar, this year we will have a food truck just outside the building selling hamburgers, hot dogs, corn dogs, French fries, cakes, drinks and snacks beginning at 10:00am. No need to leave the area for lunch or drinks.

The floor plan is different from past years so take a look so you will know your way around the day of the show.

January 2024 Spare Parts & Next Meeting

The January 2024 special edition of Spare Parts can now be accessed under the Spare Parts tab above or directly by clicking here.

Our next meeting will be on Monday, January 8, 2024 at the Deep Run Park Recreation Center beginning at 6:30 p.m. It is important that everyone who can attend as we will be planning for February's Old Dominion Open.

December 2023 Spare Parts & Next Meeting

The December 2023 issue of Spare Parts can be accessed by clicking here or under the Spare Parts tab above.

Our final meeting of the year will be held on December 18 at the Deep Run Recreation Center in Deep Run Park beginning at 6:30 p.m. We will have our annual holiday dinner for club members as well as our chapter contest and a special prize drawing! More details can be found in Spare Parts.

In addition to our usual categories, our contest will feature awards for the theme--TV and Movies--as well as awards for the James Alvis Memorial Build.

PLEASE LEGIBLY PRINT THE ENTRY FORM IN SPARE PARTS PRIOR TO THE CONTEST... ONE FOR EACH ENTRY. We anticipate a record number of entries so your cooperation in doing so will greatly help the registration process. Also, please consider arriving early to register your models.

November Newsletter and Next Meeting: November 20, 20223

The November newsletter can be found by clicking here or under the Spare Parts tab above. 

Our next meeting will be held on Monday, November 20, at the Deep Run Park Recreation Center. The hall will open at 5:30 for silent auction donations and registration and the meeting will begin at 6:30!

Bob Walls, our auction guru, already has in excess of 100 kits and supplies up for auction but we have room for lots more. Be sure to take this chance to gain some "home front" points by decreasing your stash in time for Christmas!

And bring loads of cash and/or a checkbook to the meeting. There will be primo kits available at bargain basement prices. But remember... NO CREDIT OR DEBIT CARDS ACCEPTED. All proceeds will go to the Virginia War Memorial Foundation so come prepared to bid, bid, bid.

Also, and importantly, we will hold our annual chapter officer election. Please print the ballot from the newsletter and bring it with you to the meeting.

2024 ODO Forms

The editable Model Registration Master Form and Model Entry Form have been added to the 2024 ODO tab above. Simply click on the link, save to your PC, and complete and print. Doing so before the show will save you valuable time!

The brochure for the 2024 ODO is now available online. This includes contest category listings, contest rules, and general information. The model registration forms will be added at a later date.

New Spare Parts & September Meeting

Our next meeting will be held on Monday, September 18, at the Deep Run Recreation Center off of Ridgefield Parkway. Doors open at 6:00 p.m. with the meeting starting at 6:30 sharp.

Doug Hayes will give a presentation on 3D printing and we will hold nominations for our 2024 officers. Also, those of you who did not receive a kit for the James Alvis tribute build will have the opportunity to get one from Mike Lyons.

August Newsletter and Next Meeting: August 21, 2023

IPMS Richmond's August meeting will be next Monday, August 21, at 6:30 PM at the Deep Run Park Recreation Building.  John Robinson will give us a presentation on airbrushing basics and Bob Walls will bring in his collection of airbrushes and answer questions. Even though summer is drawing to a close, let's see if we can keep our good attendance going!

IPMS Richmond Loses Two Longtime Members

It's very sad to report on the recent deaths of two members of the IPMS Richmond community: James Alvis and Frank Gomillion.

James Alvis passed away last weekend of natural causes. Visitation and burial will be:

James was a longtime member of IPMS Richmond and exemplified someone who truly loved the hobby. He was a prolific modeler and his interests spanned all genres and we all will certainly miss his "Show & Tell" presentations.

Frank Gomillion passed away on July 7, 2023 after a prolonged illness. Funeral and burial will be:

Frank was a member of IPMS Richmond during the 1980-90s. He gravitated towards figure painting and was one of the original members of the Virginia Company of Military Figure Collectors. Although he moved to Fredericksburg he was a frequent attendee at the Old Dominion Open.

Please keep these two gentlemen in your thoughts and prayers.

July 17 Meeting and Newsletter

Our next meeting will be held on Monday, July 17, at the Deep Run Park Recreation Center beginning at 6:30 p.m. (hall opens at 6:00).

Ashley Abernathy will present a demo on cutting and using foam insulation board for model and diorama bases. We will also have our monthly "Show & Tell" and Mike Lyons will return with his hoard of raffle kits.
